DENTAL EXAM AND CLEANING
Do you want to feel more confident in your smile? The first step to a more confident smile is your dental exam and cleaning.
At Somerset Smiles, Dr. Katherine King will perform a comprehensive dental exam at your initial dental exam. Your exam will include:
Diagnostic X-rays (radiographs): Diagnostic x-rays are essential for detection of cavities, tumors, cysts, and bone loss in order to achieve a healthy mouth.
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease (bone loss or gum loss that could be making your teeth loose).
Examination for cavities: All tooth surfaces will be checked for cavities with special dental instruments so a plan can be established to fix these issues.
Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings and crowns to insure they are not leaking and causing cavities underneath them.
Each initial dental exam and regular dental check up includes a professional dental cleaning (dental prophylaxis). It is performed by our Registered Dental Hygienists Stephanie Reynolds. A dental cleaning includes:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease that can destroy the bones and gums around the teeth causing them to become loose.
Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
BENEFITS OF DENTAL EXAM AND CLEANING
- SAVE MONEY: Regular dental cleanings can help prevent future dental needs making your wallet much happier. The investment is well worth it.
- PREVENT GINGIVITIS AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE: Gingivitis is due to the build up of plaque (food and bacteria) around your teeth. It causes irritation, swelling, and bleeding to occur to the gums. If allowed to progress it can lead to periodontal disease where the gums and bones surrounding the teeth break down leading to loose teeth that need to be removed.
- PREVENT SYSTEMIC DISEASES: Did you know that poor oral health has been linked to multiple systemic diseases such as Heart disease, Diabetes, Stroke, and Dementia?
Maintaining a consistent dental cleaning schedule is one of the most important things you can do as a dental patient.
